Executive Upskilling & Strategic Career Transformation
Transitioning from operational leader to strategic value creator through intensive global education and concurrent consulting.
Challenge
After building a career on hands-on operational leadership, I confronted a ceiling in accessing senior executive transformation and value creation roles due to a lack of formal education. My learning style has always been hands-on, leading me to build a diverse, practical skill set through real-world roles across operations, guest experience, finance, marketing, technology, and leadership. To transition strategically, I needed to acquire advanced strategic, financial, and analytical capabilities rapidly, alongside formal credentials.
Actions Taken
Structured Academic Execution
Relocated to Germany to study International Management, then transitioned to complete a double Bachelor’s in International Business (Finland, perfect grades) and International Management (Germany). Visa and financial constraints in my final semester required remote degree completion, leading to concurrent enrollment in a Diploma of Project Management in Australia while working full-time.
Targeted Skill Acquisition
In the same semester, completed over 30 specialized certifications in high-value disciplines: AI Product Management, Business Analysis, Agile Leadership, Six Sigma, Supply Chain Management, Fintech, and Global Public Health, deliberately broadening beyond hospitality roots.
Peak Performance Under Pressure
While consulting full-time for a tech-based tourism scale-up, coordinated four international exam trips spanning Sri Lanka, Germany, and Finland in less than a month. This involved remote work, overnight flights, intense study with 24-hour turnarounds in Germany for each exam. All while maintaining work commitments and writing my thesis.
Financial Acumen Development
Supplemented practical financial experience with Wall Street Prep certifications in Financial & Valuation Modeling and PE Deal Process & LBO Modeling, preparing for the technical demands of PE/VC and C-suite roles.
Results
- Successfully balanced extreme professional and academic demands
- Attained a double degree, a diploma, and 30+ certifications
- Consulting engagement contract extended twice due to work quality despite extraordinary circumstances
- Thesis: “Novel Business Transformation Techniques in Hospitality”, an original thought leadership contribution
